Book of Dead: Slot Paytable, RTP Versions and Max Win
In short — our verdict: 8.0/10 — Play'n GO publishes five return configurations for this title and lets the casino pick one. The 96.21% you read almost everywhere is only the default. The ceiling is printed in coins, not multiples: 250,000.
You can look up this game's return and still not know what your casino runs. Play'n GO ships Book of Dead in five RTP configurations — 96.21%, 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% and 84.18% — and the operator chooses. We read the studio's own rules document, played two demo sessions and photographed every screen we quote a number from. The gap between the headline figure and the floor is 12.03 percentage points.

Book of Dead Strengths and Weaknesses
Pros: What Works Well
- Pro: The studio publishes all five RTP configurations in one table, with the default marked — most makers publish one figure or none
- Pro: The full paytable, bet grid and rules text are readable in a free demo without an account
- Pro: Licences are checkable by number: MGA/B2B/225/2012, which the Malta register lists as Licensed, and UK account 55949, which the British register lists as Active, with zero regulatory actions on record
- Pro: One symbol expands across the whole reel in free spins and pays with gaps allowed, which the base game never does
Cons: What Holds It Back
- Con: A casino can legally run the 84.18% build under the same name and artwork; where a deployment does print a return it prints the default, so the screen never confirms which build your casino runs
- Con: The ceiling is printed in coins, so the multiplier depends on your bet configuration — the same game is quoted as 5,000x and 25,000x
- Con: The studio contradicts itself on volatility: 10 VERY HIGH in the 2022 rules document, 7 HIGH in the 2026 reissue
- Con: No laboratory publishes a certificate naming this title, so the fairness claim sits at company level only
- Con: The gamble round caps at 2,500 coins — a hundredth of the game ceiling, so it is not a route to the top prize

What the Book of Dead Paytable Pays
The paytable splits into two bases, and catalogues routinely merge them. Symbol wins multiply the bet per LINE. Scatter wins multiply the TOTAL bet, and the rules state it outright: "All wins multiplied by bet staked per line except for SCATTERS."

Rich Wilde is the top symbol at 5,000 for five, 1,000 for four, 100 for three and 10 for two. The pharaoh pays 2,000 for five, Anubis and Horus 750 each, the A and K 150, and the Q, J and 10 pay 100. The book pays 200, 20 and 2 times the total bet for five, four and three. It is also the only symbol that pays from anywhere on the reels.
One Symbol Is Both Scatter and Wild
The Tomb is a single symbol doing two jobs, and the rules say so in one line: "The Tomb SCATTER will pay anywhere on the reels. The Tomb is also WILD! It can substitute for any other symbol to form a winning combo."
A page that describes a separate wild is describing a different slot. It matters in practice: because the book substitutes, it can complete a line and trigger the feature on the same spin.
Five RTP Configurations for One Slot
Play'n GO prints the five builds as one table in its own Game Rules and Settings document, GRS0595. A footnote says default values may vary by market, and one line settles the rest: "Default settings can be changed by the operator." The same document adds that altering the default bets alters the maximum win with it.

Three sources inside the studio agree. The 2022 document, its reissue, and the game record that lists defaultRtp 96.21 alongside fields for the 94, 91, 87 and 84 builds. What a player sees is narrower. The client prints a return figure only when the deployment carries a jurisdiction code, and then it prints the default. The public demo has no such code, so it shows no return figure at all.
Book of Dead Prints Its Ceiling in Coins
The paytable ends on "WIN UP TO 250000 COINS!" — in the game bundle it is a template with 250000 passed into it. The figure 5,000x does not appear in the game at all. It is derived: 250,000 divided by the 50-coin maximum bet, which is ten lines at five coins.

The studio writes the same ceiling two more ways: a maximum exposure of 500,000 in money at the 100.00 maximum bet, and a winCap field of 5,000 in its own game record rather than in the client. Its German build prints something else again — "capped at a maximum of 25000 times total bet" — because that build drops the coin layer entirely. One game, one studio, two different multipliers. We lead with the coin figure and attach a multiplier only alongside the bet configuration it belongs to.
Free Spins and the Symbol You Do Not Pick
Three or more books award 10 free spins, and three more during the round add another 10. Before the round begins the game picks one ordinary symbol at random. That symbol then expands across the whole reel for the rest of the feature.

The rules spell out the part that makes the feature worth having: "Expanded symbols do not need to appear adjacent to each other to result in a winning combination." Gaps are allowed in the feature and nowhere else. In both of our sessions the chosen symbol was the 10, the cheapest in the table. It is an honest counterweight to any screenshot showing a grid of Rich Wilde.
The Gamble Round and Where It Stops
After a win you can gamble it. Pick red or black for a 50% chance to double, or a suit for 25% to quadruple, up to five times in a row. The rules add that the gamble "will not impact the overall RTP", and the round caps at 2,500 coins.
That cap is the detail worth carrying. It is one hundredth of the game's 250,000-coin ceiling, so the gamble is a side door, not a route to the top prize. The Spanish build removes the gamble entirely, which is a reminder that the version you play is a local decision.
Where the Studio Contradicts Itself
Volatility is the one number where Play'n GO disagrees with itself. The Game Rules and Settings dated rate it "Volatility: 10 VERY HIGH". The reissue dated and the studio's own game record both say 7, rated HIGH.

We read both documents and we print both with their dates, because averaging them would invent a figure neither source states. A bare "high volatility" label hides the disagreement instead of reporting it.
What We Could Not Check
This is an RNG reel game, so there is no server seed, no client seed and no published hash — nothing a reader could recompute. Anyone promising a way to verify a single spin on this title is describing a mechanism that does not exist here.

What we could check, we did. The paytable against the studio's rules document, the bet steppers to their stops, the rules text end to end, and the licence numbers in the registers. The gap stays visible rather than papered over, and it is the reason the score above stops where it does.
What Each Source Prints for the Same Game
| Document | Return | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Game Rules and Settings GRS0595 | 96.21% / 94.25% / 91.25% / 87.25% / 84.18% | All five RTP configurations, default marked |
| The client's own help screen | 96.21%, only with a jurisdiction code | The default build; public demo prints no figure at all |
| German build of the same title | 96.21%, like every jurisdiction build | Replaces the coin ceiling with 25,000x total bet |

- Coin ceiling
- A maximum win expressed in coins rather than bet multiples — here 250,000 coins, which is 5,000x only at the 50-coin maximum bet.
- Expanding symbol
- The ordinary symbol picked at random before free spins, which then covers a whole reel and pays with gaps allowed.
- Scatter-wild

What Else Do Readers Ask?
Five questions come up about this game. Three have answers the studio prints itself, one is about a product it does not sell, and one is about how we checked.
Does Book of Dead have one RTP?
No. Play'n GO publishes five configurations — 96.21%, 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% and 84.18% — and the operator chooses which one runs.
Can you buy the bonus in Book of Dead?
No. The title has no feature buy, and Play'n GO publishes none across its catalogue.
Is the scatter separate from the wild?
No. The Tomb is one symbol doing both jobs: it pays from anywhere and substitutes for every other symbol.
What is the maximum win in coins?
The paytable prints 250,000 coins, which works out to 5,000 times a 50-coin maximum bet.
How did we check these figures?
For this title we loaded the studio's own free demo, read the paytable and rules screens end to end, walked the bet steppers to their stops, and looked up its studio's licence numbers in the regulators' registers. Where a studio serves no demo, the page covering it says so instead.
